Presidents report
Scouting continues to prosper in Clitheroe. We have two new
Groups which add to our numbers. The very important and
beneficial training for young people is driven by a very strong
team of Leaders and Helpers, led by a dedicated District
Commissioner.
However if you look at individual Groups you will see that we
are very short of lay support. Just count the number of
administrators required. The tasks of Chair, Secretary and
Treasurer are essential for the continued welfare of the Group.
If Leaders are having to do the Admin. work then the actual
essential work of training must suffer.
Again, if you look at the Executive Committee, particularly
members who are not in Leadership roles, you will see it has a
fair number of very long serving supporters. Where are the next
generation of supporters coming from? I would suggest, for
example, either parents or ex Scouts. We need your support.
Without new volunteers Scouting could fall by the wayside! DO
NOT LET THIS HAPPEN. Speak to any member of the Executive; they
will make you most welcome, and point you in the right
direction.
John Hemingway
Secretary's report
The figures for 2009 show a massive increase which is something
to celebrate. However one must place on record that there are
two additional Groups in the District: A new Group at Sabden
with 43 members and St Leonard’s Langho with 69 members having
transferred for Blackburn District. Both Groups are of course to
be congratulated and welcomed into this District.
There are as usual a few long serving Leaders retiring: From St
Paul’s the full team of Beaver Leaders, Barry and Julie
Bleasdale, Eileen Hampshire and Paula Houghton have decided to
call it a day. (See Barry’s report for more details) Loyola will
miss Doreen Musgrove after serving 10 years as Cub Scout Leader
and Bob Noblett is retiring from Chipping where he has given
sterling service as Cub Scout Leader and latterly Assistant
Scout Leader.
The District in 2008 received two generous grants which were
used to finance improvements to Sandal Holme Barn, Bashall
Eaves. Whist this Camping Barn is leased to East Lancs Scout
Scout County it is of considerable interest to our District in
which it is situated. One grant came from the Duncan Eglin Trust
Fund and the other was from the Lancashire County Council Local
Grants Scheme. The main improvement funded was an indoor
bouldering wall which was officially inaugurated in June.
The Annual General Meeting featured a presentation to Mr Ted
Boden, retiring District Chairman, and the appointment of
Councillor Mary Robinson as the new District Chairman. Mr David
Smith was elected as the new District Treasurer in place of
Tracey Spencer who was willing to continue as Independent
Examiner of Accounts. Also at the meeting there was an inspiring
audio-visual presentation by members who attended the World
Jamboree held in the UK in 2007.
I should like at this juncture to pay tribute to our long
serving District Badge Secretary, Keith Robinson. He has done an
excellent and important job and continues in a role which seems
to become more demanding as time goes on with requests from the
County for detailed statistics on badge recipients
